Crossroads is named for the neighborhood of Chawri Bazaar (Chawri means crossroads) where the largest mosque in India, the grand sandstone 17th century Jama Masjid is located. The haunting sound of the Islamic Call to Prayer is most clearly heard at dawn when there is minimal traffic noise, and beckons Muslims to draw their attention to Allah five times a day. At Dawn on January and again in June, I sat on the steep front steps recording the sound and filming people coming and going on the steps. This made me aware of the importance and integration of the mosque daily life of the neighborhood for those of all faiths, as both a sacred space and a meeting place, in a bustling area in Old Delhi.
